U3A South Coast

Location: The U3A (South Coast) is based in the beautiful coastal town of Victor Harbor on the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. Victor Harbor's economy is based mainly on agriculture, fishing, wine and food production as well as tourism. The entire coastal region population swells considerably during the summer months as thousands of tourists enjoy the scenic beauty of the area as well as the unique wild life and pristine beaches. However, this stunning coastline is also popular for visitors during the winter months as they converge on the area to see a number of whales that frequent these waters at this time of year.

Membership and Activities: U3A (South Coast) has about 400 members and this year 2015, marks the 28th anniversary of our organisation. There are currently 17 special interest groups providing information and learning on topics such as French, Italian and Latin languages, books, play reading, Shakespeare, philosophy, photography, opera and classic music, elements of law, history of European art as well as a very popular social group called “connects” which, as the name suggests, members can just “connect” socially. U3A holds weekly presentations with guest speakers providing interesting talks on a whole range of subjects from health, travel, myths and biographies to chats on local history and medical research and technology.

Group excursions are offered two or three times each year and this gives members the opportunity of exploring places like the SA Health and Medical Research Institute and the Goolwa Barrages, a fascinating area of our peninsula.

Personal comments: U3A provides the perfect opportunity for retirees to pursue interests that they may not have had time for during their busy working life. Attending sessions, can help members to remain active in both mind and body with stimulation, social contact and interesting and informative information and knowledge in our 3rd age.
