Thurrock U3A

I am Glenda Stephens BEM, newsletter editor of Thurrock U3A. Our chairperson is Maggie Whitbread.

Where we are: Grays Thurrock is a borough about 20 miles east of London, England and situated on the River Thames.

Our organisation was established in August 2001. It is run by its members for its members, by pooling and sharing members’ skills, abilities and time. During the past fourteen years we have created an excellent resource for retired people in Thurrock.

Member meetings: We currently have over 500 members with 30+ activity groups covering a wide and varied range of interests. All our groups meet in members’ homes, local halls and sheltered housing complexes. The latter venues give residents the opportunity to participate alongside U.3.A. members.

A General Meeting is held on the last Wednesday of the month at 10.00 a.m in the Civic Hall, Grays. Before the meeting there is the opportunity to book outings and social events.

During the recent election Channel 5 TV News visited our monthly meeting and one of our groups to talk to people about their views on voting. This can be seen on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr-09hGztkk

Some of our members represented the National U3A in a debate in the House of Lords (our parliament) on the views of older citizens. It was only the third time in the history of House of Lords that commoners were allowed to speak!!!

Members receive general information relating to U3A issues from 10.00 – 10.30 a.m. After this a guest speaker provides an interesting talk on a variety of topics. Tea and coffee are provided at the end of the meeting.

A monthly newsletter is sent out by email where possible. Other members can pick up a copy at the Monthly Meeting. The newsletter contains current group news and an events calendar for the month ahead. The newsletters can be read on our website
