From Jean Bishop, Chair of Worthing U3A.
Worthing is on the South Coast of England in West Sussex and has a population of 103,200 (2010 records) and just a few miles at the back of Worthing are the South Downs and lots of small picturesque villages. It is popular with retirees and therefore local U3A’s have no problem in attracting members.

U3A Membership: We currently have in excess of 450 members and have been established now for 20 years. We have a monthly meeting usually with a speaker or with a specific theme. We have regular annual events such as our Strawberry Garden Party in June which this year doubled as a Diamond Jubilee Party. Our entertainment group puts on ad hoc usually once a year shows. We have Quizzes and Social activities such as our Outings and Lunch Club. At Christmas we have a party and last year this included entertainment from an excellent local close up magician.

Interest Groups: We have approx 45 Interest groups at any one time ranging from Yoga and Scottish Dancing as physically active pursuits to Music Appreciation and History on the more academic side. All of our groups have a learning facet whether it be learning how to play Scrabble or learning about wartime Britain but we try to combine a social element in our groups so that they are a meeting place for social interaction and making new friends.

Website: Our website can be found at www.U3a-worthing.org.uk and full details of our groups and on going activities are regularly posted on that site.
